Joanna vs Griffon: Part I by Vanqvisher Joanna vs Griffon: Part I by Vanqvisher
Griffon sat on her knees patiently as she took in the sight of the makeshift arena built inside the ballroom of a hotel. A large, square ring made of tatami mats was positioned in the center of the room, while a large monitor displaying the brackets of the private tournament run by an anonymous millionaire. What seemed like a shady event on paper, Griffon and the rest of the fighters had been treated with respect. Though being the youngest ones in the tournament, Griffon and her partner Alix, had been invited into this tournament by their master to test their abilities. Alix had fallen in the first round, while Griffon advanced to the quarter finals.

Griffon could feel her heart pumping as she was close to the finals, something that surprised many participating. She sat alongside the remaining seven individuals wearing her school's gi, raven hair tied into a tight bun. The time to wait in between fights was killing her internally despite the aloof expression Griffon was wearing. Finally, the ring announcer had climbed into the ring with microphone in hand and referee behind him.

“Welcome fighters to the quarter finals! Tonight we'll be going through the final eight combatants to see who will be going on towards the final night! Let us begin with our first match!”

Griffon looked towards the giant screen to see that she was displayed against her opponent: a fighter from the United States known as Joanna Louvier, a shotokan karate practitioner who was beginning her MMA career. Griffon got to her feet and climbed into the ring, walking towards the center where Joanna met her at the same time.

The American was a slightly taller woman with blonde hair tied in a simple tail, wearing a green karate gi. While the height difference didn't bother Griffon much, it was the weight difference that concerned her slightly. Joanna weighed in at 155 pounds while Griffon was at 124, which meant that there was gonna be extra power in Joanna’s strikes. The ref didn't bother explaining the rules as the two understood by this point. A medical staff member climbed in and handed both fighters a mouthguard.

“Don’t look so stiff.” Joanna said with a smile, “You’re not gonna be able to move well if you stand like a statue.”

Griffon frowned at Joanna's teasing, simply slipping in her mouthguard. Joanna shrugged and slipped in hers, the two bowing before the ref called for the fight to begin.

The story is fantastic...love the breakdown of the two fighters but the picture really sells the atmosphere of the makeshift arena...both looking confident. This has the makings of a great battle.

A fine contrast. It is not only we have a blond and a raven haired girl, both are also different types. The blonde lets her body and face natural, the raven haired girl has painted her lips, her eyebrows (I think), her eyeshadows and her toe nails.

Both of course look great. I really can not decide who should win. Should the big natural feet crash in the raven haired girls face and knock her out? Or should the feet with the nice painted toe nails crash in the blonde girls face and knock her out?

I have to say I also love the contrasts here... It wasn't necessarily intended because the two characters were written independently of each other. So it's pretty organic that they ended up seeming so different in terms of looks and personality. Joanna is tall, relaxed, and self-assured, whereas Griffon is of shorter stature and less muscular, perhaps a bit more anxious, and plucky. Will Joanna's cockiness be her downfall, or is the young Griffon just severely outmatched here? We will see!

Wow this is going to be extremely fun and exciting.
If their height is not much different but the weight gap is 31 lbs, then it's going to be a very tough match for Griffon as she will surely have to rely on her speed.
However if Joanna body got slow twitch muscle fiber more than fast twitch muscle fiber, which can happens from wrestling practice, she will be tough, hard hitting but will not have Griffon's speed. That will makes a very exciting match :D

Actually, Joanna is six inches taller than Griffon, so she has a reach advantage, and she's also 6 years older than her. So Griffon will have to beat her on tactics and skill alone, pretty much, if she wants to stand a chance. However, I find your insights on fast-twitch vs slow-twitch muscle fiber very compelling. I just can't get over how good they both look in a gi. It's going to be fun illustrating their battle.

Then Griffon will have a big problem lol
It might  be the case that Joanna practice too many kind of martial arts, so her skill set is spread out to thin while Griffon putely concentrated on Karate. So the bigger and heavier girl will have disadvantages when it comes to pure karate match?

Anyway im very excited how this going to proceed, great illustration of both character btw ;)

Well, she's been practicing karate for a long time. It's her first love. But she hasn't doing it regularly as of the time of this match (2 years before Grudge Match), so she might be a bit rusty. But this isn't a standard karate tournament--it's a bit more... Underground.

Griffon does not look friendly. Or the type that likes flowers. Or puppies.

The thing about being a Goth is not that you hate flowers and puppies, but that you're painfully aware that flowers and puppies will one day shrivel and die like the rest of us.

Griffon is probably just contemplating Joanna's mortality, as well as her own.

Yeah Goths are annoying like that. But a goth being a fighter is s great and scary combination.

I find it endearing, in Griffon's case, at least. She has this fearlessness that comes from wisdom beyond her years, I think.

Your writing is very good. You should consider making entire stories to go along with your art.

Well, I guess you already do that - but I mean written stories as well as comics.
